When you first create your hobo on HoboWars, you are randomly put on a side. The available sides are East, South, and West. The North side is reserved for the administrators of the game. Sides only have two purposes in the game and these purposes are very closely intertwined.

Fighting

When you go to attack a hobo, you may notice that their side is listed along with their other stats. This is an important thing to consider when attacking. If you attack someone who is from one of the other sides, then you will receive normal experience when you win. If you attack a hobo from your own side, then you will only receive half of the normal experience. This forces you to attack hobos from other sides, which leads into the next purpose of sides.

Side Wars

If you go and look at Duncan's house, you will see the three sides listed as well as the number of points that each side has. Farther down the page you will see which hobos on your side have the most and least points. Below this is an indication of the positive or negative number of points that you have for your side. These points are gained when you beat a hobo from another side and are lost when you lose in a fight against a hobo from another side, thus creating positive and negative margins. You can also see your own points down at the bottom of the page

Winning Side Wars

Duncan: "Hey there, so you've come to the North side to get some rest from all that fighting in other 3 sides? Ahh, no? You want to know the score on fighting? Ok I guess I have time to show it."

At the end of each week, Sunday, the Side War for the week is ended and everything starts over again. At that time, every hobo on the winning side will receive a cash prize. All hobos in the top ten for their side will get a cash prize as well. The amount of money for winning that is shown when you look at the side totals is how much you would receive if you were the top hobo on your side. This amount decreases as your place is reduced.

Duncan: "Also Ive heard that City leaders will put up an award for the side that is leading and I heard that the prize was damn good. If your side wins you will get $-,--- as an award. Best 10 fighters in every side will also get an award, for example if you were first in your side's top 10 you would get $-,---. So better go and help your side. Ahh yes, as I understand it winning side will be picked at the start of every week and everyone on that side will get a part of the prize."

Tags

During the course of the contest, if you earn (+)100 points for your side or more you will be have "Cpt." tag put in front of your name. If you earn (+)500 SideWars points or more, you will get a "Gen." tag. Should you have -25 or less you will get a "Loser." tag.

Side Message Board

You will have access to your side's message board. This board is rarely a source of interesting or meaningful conversation as the only common factor for everyone ion that board is being on the same side. Posts stating "OMG WE NEED TO WIN SIDE WARS!!!!" do not seem to have any influence on the outcome of side wars.
