Bummys
Originally created by Rev and later hosted by Dr Shipman, Count de Monet, and Doctor Know, the Bummy Awards (the Bummys) is a (mostly) annual celebration of the best and worst of Hobowars. Similar to the Grammys or the Emmys, citizens of the Hobo community nominate and vote for their favorite players in a wide variety of categories that change slightly every year. Having a Bummy title is a huge bragging right and there is fierce competition for even the ‘worst’ of them. Campaigning is allowed and encouraged for the two week period leading up to the final voting round.
"Like most good ideas, I came up with it while I was dropping a deuce. Yeah, poopin. My wife had left her copy of People magazine in the bathroom, and feeling like I was in this one for the long haul, I needed some reading material. I started to leaf through, and it was the "Best and Worst of 2005" issue. The wheels started to turn, and once I had finished doing my business I hopped on the computer and bounced the idea off of my muse, Yuk. He immediately liked the idea, and we kicked around some ideas for categories before I headed to the F&G board to post up the first annual Bummy Award nomination thread." --Rev

Process
From 2005 – 2009, the Bummys consisted of two stages: nomination stage and voting stage. Nominations and votes, payment of fees, and prize donations were sent to and calculated manually on a spreadsheet by the Bummys’ host. This involved an extensive amount of time and tracking on the host’s behalf and became quite burdensome.
With huge thanks to Cube!, 2010 brought us the first year of automated Bummys. An in-game, automated system was created and consists of three stages: nomination stage, first-round voting, and final-round voting. Some specifics:
- Nomination stage: You may nominate anyone you wish by entering their ID number in the box provided.
- First-round voting: The first round of voting is open to anyone who received a nomination during the nomination stage. Nominee names are listed in the order of most to least nominations received. The top four vote recipients in each category advance to a final round of voting.
- Final-round voting: The final round of voting is open to the top four vote recipients in each category from the first round of voting. Nominee names are listed in random order and change every time you open the page. First through fourth place winners are chosen in each category based on the total number of votes they receive.
Through a form accessed via a link in the City, this system allows for direct nominations and votes, payment of fees and prize donations, and calculation of the results and prize monies. This updated system streamlined the Bummys process and relieved the burden placed on the host to manually track and calculate everything.
Rules
The rules varied from year to year, but, for the most part, coincided with the current rules listed below. Of note, 2010 was the only year that allowed voting for yourself, your gang, and your gang mates.
General Rules
- Permanently jailed players and long-term jailed players are ineligible.
- All HoboWars staff members are eligible.
- All other players are eligible, unless an individual category states otherwise.
- Game staff gangs are ineligible; all other gangs are eligible.
- A player who breaks the rules will become ineligible from all categories, with any entries for that player disqualified. Jail time might also ensue, depending on the offense.
- A player nomination that does not meet a category's criteria will become disqualified.
Player-Specific Rules
- You are not allowed to pay people to nominate or vote for you, or anyone else, in any form. This includes "trading" votes.
- You are not allowed to advertise your campaign on the public Message Boards (with the exception of the Fun & Games board), or in Chat. This is mainly to prevent those two places from becoming bogged down with campaign advertisements.
- You are, however, allowed to campaign in the designated campaign thread on the General Discussion board, on the Fun & Games board, and on gang boards.
- You are allowed to advertise your campaign in your name, journals, signature, lottos, and Bummys sponsor messages.
- You are allowed to advertise other players' campaigns in your name, journal, signature, lottos, and Bummys sponsor messages.
- You are not allowed to pay other players to advertise your campaign for you.
- You are not allowed to threaten players to nominate or vote for you.
- You are not allowed to randomly solicit other players for nominations and votes. Friends and gangmates are okay, but, don't continue to solicit them if they aren't interested.
Gang-Specific Rules
- A gang is allowed to hold any kind of discussion about the Bummys on their gang board.
- A gang is allowed to campaign, but, its campaign is subject to the same rules as individual player campaigns.
- A gang is allowed to determine who they do and do not support, and is free to share that information with their members either through mass mails or their gang board.
- A gang is not allowed to share who they do and do not support on the public message boards, or in Chat.
- A gang is not allowed to pay anyone to nominate or vote for them or anyone else, in any form. This includes "trading" votes.
- A gang is not allowed to threaten anyone to nominate or vote for them or anyone else.
Restrictions
- You cannot nominate yourself.
- You cannot vote for yourself.
- You cannot vote for current gangmates.
- You cannot vote for recent gangmates.
- You cannot vote for a gang you are currently in.
- You cannot vote for a gang you were recently in.

2007 Bummys
Specific information about the 2007 Bummys administration is missing since the message boards were accidentally deleted sometime in 2008 and the HoboWeekly was out of commission by that time.
The 2007 Bummys was either run by Rev, with Dr Shipman assisting by creating the Youtube videos with the results, or run entirely by Dr Shipman.
The Youtube videos, with the results, can be found here: 2007 Bummys Results Video (Part 1 of 2) and 2007 Bummys Results Video (Part 2 of 2).

2008 Bummys
With Rev's departure from the game, the 2008 Bummys was run entirely by Dr Shipman. Of note, the 2008 Bummys began in November 2008, however, the results were not calculated and posted until February 2009, due to Dr Shipman's computer problems.

2009 Bummys
Like the 2008 Bummys, the 2009 Bummys was run entirely by Dr Shipman. The nomination and voting stages happened as planned, however, sometime after the voting stage ended, Dr Shipman disappeared and the results were never published. It was a year of great sorrow.

2010 Bummys
2010 brought us the first year of automated Bummys, hosted by Count de Monet.
Of note, this was the first and only round of Bummys that allowed voting for yourself, your gang, and your gang mates. Some of the winner information is missing because the information disappeared from the Bummys results link when the 2012 Bummys started. If you have any additional information that can be added, please let us know.

2011 Bummys
There was some discussion about running the 2011 Bummys, but it never happened.
2012 Bummys
The 2012 Bummys was hosted by Doctor Know. Of note, the Wittiest Hobo and Most Likely to call the Whambulance categories had skewed results for the 4th place winners because the person who was previously in the running was jailed and therefore disqualified from the competition shortly before the final voting stage ended. The 5th place winners from the first round of voting took his places in these categories.
