Okay maybe not, but they are the only "animal" you can find, capture, own, and raise in HoboWars. One of the biggest perks about owning a rat is that it can directly damage your opponent during hobo fights. You can also sign up your rats for duels in order to win some extra money.

Rats must be found and captured before they can be raised to become that formidable sidekick in hobo fights or powerful combatant in rat fights you want.  Rats can be found all over the Hobo World and be trained to become a powerful attacker or formidable wall just like any hobo can.  You can even save their memory if you desire.  However, rats are pets and you must have a place for them in your hobo life.

Rats can be found all across HoboWorld. However, before you can run around catching rats you must first purchase a Rat Cage to put them all in. Fortunately, the Pet Shop in the City sells rat cages, from one-slot cages that can only hold one rat to three-slot cages that hold up to three! You can only own one type of rat cage at a time; when you purchase a different one, the one you currently have gets thrown out with no refund and replaced by the new cage. So, no, you can't have five three-slot cages or one three-slot cage, one two-slot cage, and one one-slot cage. Therefore, it is highly recommended to buy a two-slot cage if you a non-donator or a three-slot cage if you are a donator. (If you lose your donator status, you still get to keep and use the three-slot cage; it does not disappear or get downgraded to a two-slot cage.)

Rat Stats
 +
Rats are just like hobos in that they have stats that determine their worth.  Their stats can be trained and upgraded, and they have skills that can be increased to give additional benefits.

:<font color=#35802e>Rat ran away before you could get to it.</font>
+
Basic Rat Stats
 +
Rats have 4 stats you can train and/or upgrade and 3 upgrade only stats.  These stats are what defines your rats worth in everything you do with it.  There is also a calculated stat (Index) based off of the others.

! align="left" | <big>Hunger</big>
 +
|- valign="top"
 +
| Lifespan is the total number of days your rat has left before it dies, and Age is the total number of days your rat has lived so far. Every major (AM) reset, your rat's Age increases by one day and its Lifespan  decreases by one day. Rats die once their Lifespan reaches zero. Additional Lifespan can be gained through upgrade purchases and the Vegetarianism skill.
 +
| Hunger determines how much Energy your rat can gain through consuming food. It is reset every day during the major (AM) reset. Although rats can consume any food item in the game, they won't gain any secondary benefits that that food item would normally bestow upon hobos. Additional Max Hunger can be gained through upgrade purchases and the Buddhism skill.

! align="left" | <big>Energy</big>
 +
! align="left" | <big>Agility</big>
 +
|- valign="top"
 +
| Energy is similar to Awake as it's required to preform rat activities. It takes 30 Energy per hour for a rat to train, 10 Energy to fight another rat, and 30 Energy to sign up a rat for a duel. Rats regain 5 Energy every 20 minutes, taking 6 hours and 40 minutes to recover 100 Energy. A rat can also gain Energy by being fed food items. Additionally, Max Energy can be increased by upgrade purchases.
 +
| Agility is similar to your hobo's speed stat in that it provides your rat with more chances to attack. Agility can be gained through training and upgrade purchases. Agility can be further boosted by the Speed Mastery skill; however, the skill only affects rat fights and rat duels.
 +
|-

! align="left" | <big>Strength</big>
 +
! align="left" | <big>Concentration</big>
 +
|- valign="top"
 +
| Strength is similar to your hobo's power stat in that it provides your rat with offensive power. Strength can be gained through training and upgrade purchases. Strength can be further boosted by the Damage Mastery skill; however, the skill only affects rat fights and rat duels.
 +
| Concentration is similar to your hobo's strength stat in that it provides your rat with defense. Concentration can be gained through training and upgrades. Concentration can be further boosted by the Defense Mastery skill; however, the skill only affects rat fights and rat duels.

! align="left" | <big>Vitality</big>

! align="left" | <big>Index</big>
 +
|- valign="top"
 +
| Vitality is similar to your hobo's life stat. Vitality can be gained through training and upgrade purchases. Vitality only matters in rat fights and rat duels.
 +
| Index determines what other rats you can fight and increases as a rat's stats or level increases. The formula for rat index is:<br />Index = 1 + ( Int{ 0.02 [ ( Level&nbsp;*&nbsp;4 ) + Agility + Concentration + Strength + ( Vitality&nbsp;/&nbsp;5 ) ] } )

There is also an unused rat stat called Weight.  This was introduced when <span style='color:blue'>Governor Malord</span> was still coding for the game, but was never finalized before Malord left.

Training Stats
 +
You can train your rat's battle stats. Rats can gain [0.40 + (0.01 * Training Mastery Level ) ] Agility / Strength / Concentration or [2 + (0.05 * Training Mastery Level) ] Vitality per train. It costs 30 Energy per training session and rats gain their stats on the hour. Rats cannot train their Lifespan, Hunger, or Energy stats. Although there is no limit to how long a rat can be trained for (as long as it has the Energy required for that training session's duration), once a rat's training session is set up, it must be completed in full before another one can be set up.

If you click "No", you will let the rat go, and, due to a glitch in the game's programming, be warped to a random coordinate in the City.
+
Upgrading Stats
 +
Upgrading your rat's stats will cost you a bit of money. You can purchase up to 10 upgrades for each rat stat. To purchase an upgrade, have the money on hand and then click the [+] in the column of the stat you want to upgrade.

With the new side wars/exploring update to HoboWars and Facebook HoboWars, you can no longer catch rats in the city on their versions. Instead, head on over to the Pet Shop and spin the Rat Roulette Wheel. You get 3 turns a day and can catch any rat formerly found in the city.
+
Rat Levels
 +
You can have your rat fight to gain experience. Rats can only attack other rats that have either the same Index or &plusmn;1 Index that they currently have. Rats gain 3 experience for defeating a rat of a lower Index, 4 experience for defeating a rat of the same Index, and 5 experience for defeating a rat of a higher Index. For every attack on the same rat, you will gain one less experience. Once you attack a rat three times in one day, you will be unable to attack it until the next major (AM) reset occurs.

Upgrades & Training
+
Every level your rat gains grants it 3 free stat upgrades and 1 free Skill point.

Battle Grounds for Rats
:How do I sign up for a duel?:

Rats are tied into most hobo fights but not all. The different areas that rats help in hobo fights are:
::Your rat must be at least level 5 and index 5 before dueling. Your rat must also have a lifespan of at least 2 in order to be listed on the Manage Arena page. Rats with 1, 0, or negative amounts of lifespan may not be able to duel.
+
* One-on-one hobo fights
::Take $15,000 out of your piggy bank, go to the Rats page, select your rat that you would like to duel, then click on "Sign up". Confirm that you would like to sign up then proceed to the "Manage arena" page. Here you can select your rats that are signed up for a duel and pick a random opponent.

+
Rat Damage during Fights
::You cannot choose a specific rat, only those that are signed up for duels. Rats that are signed up in your index will be shown as "Random opponent". If there is more than one, simply pick one.
+
Generally speaking, the higher your hobo's level, the more damage your rat will do if it gets the hits in hobo fights. Damage is also influenced by the Strength and Index of the attacking rat and the Concentration of the defending rat. The rat's Speed determines which rat is the one that attacks.

:What do I get from winning/losing a duel? :
+
Your rat's Vitality does not play a role in determining how much damage it does in hobo fights.
::For winning a duel, you receive $40,000 + 2% of the total amount bet on your duel.
+
::You receive nothing for losing a duel.
+

:What is the formula for bets placed on duels? :
+
Duels
::Payout = (Your Bet / Total of Winning Bets) * Total amount of all bets
+
You can duel your rats against the rats of other hobos. The purpose of dueling was to determine which hobo could create the ultimate rat setup, as well as gain a little monetary bonus. To duel your rat, it must have a minimum index of 5, a minimum level of 5, and have a lifespan of at least 2. It costs $15,000 and 30 rat energy to sign up for a duel. Once you have the money in hand, go to the "Sign up" link to enter your rat into the dueling world, and then use the "Manage arena" page to chose your dueling partner. Your rats cannot duel each other, only rats from another hobo.

:Can I change or remove my bet once I make it? :
+
Rat duels do not happen immediately after the pair is set. This is because hobos can wager bets on the duels. Any hobo can make a bet, but be warned that once you make a bet of any type, the bet cannot be unmade.
::No, once you make it, it cannot be changed.
+

Rats in Hobo Fights
+
For winning a duel, you receive $40,000 + 2% of the total amount bet on your duel as well as a small amount of exp. You receive nothing for losing a duel.
:How do rats help in hobo battles? :
+
::In a hobo battle, a rat gets the chance to do damage every 5 rounds of the hobo battle.
+

:What determines how much damage my rat does in a hobo battle?:
+
The formula for bets placed on duels is:<br />Payout = ( Your&nbsp;Bet&nbsp;/&nbsp;Total&nbsp;of&nbsp;Winning&nbsp;Bets ) * Total&nbsp;Amount&nbsp;of&nbsp;All&nbsp;Bets
:: Generally speaking, the higher your hobo's level, the more damage your rat will do if it gets the hits in hobo fights. Damage is also influenced by the Strength and index of the attacking rat and the Concentration of the defending rat.
+
::Your rat's Vitality is not a factor on how much damage is done in hobo battles.

List of Rats
::You can choose which rat will fight for you by clicking the 'Hobo Fights' link and then clicking the picture of the rat you want to use. If you do not do this, the highest leveled rat will fight with you in a hobo fight. If you have 2 rats with the same level, then the rat listed in the topmost slot is used for the fight.

General FAQ
 +
How do I keep rats I find?
 +
:In order to own a rat, you must buy a rat cage from the Pet Shop. If you have an open slot in your cage, you will automatically obtain the rat.
 +
 +
What is the best type of rat?
 +
:The best starting type is the Golden Rat. But as they are almost impossible to get every time, the second best is a toss-up depending on your game-play amount, style, and demand, and how much T you are willing to spend to obtain it. You might want something with a high starting energy, something with great beginning stats, or maybe just the greatest lifespan out there. Re-visit the table above to pick which fits your needs.
 +
 +
Is there a limit to the number of rounds a rat fight can go?
 +
:The limit is 999 moves, after that it simply says "**** and **** made draw." <!--- Discovered by Cashmoney (93273) on Hobo1 --->
 +
 +
There is a rat on the "Rat Fights" page with the "[Fight]" link crossed out, what does this mean?
 +
:You can only attack one rat 3 times per day. You must wait until the next day to attack it again.
 +
 +
My rat has negative lifespan. How did this happen?
 +

Rats are a hobo's best friend!

Obtainment

Rat Cages
Name Cost
One-Slot Cage $50,000
Two-Slot Cage $250,000
Three-Slot Cage* $500,000

*Only donators can purchase this rat cage.

Once you have purchased your rat cage, you can now go out and start catching rats! As previously mentioned, rats can be found all over the place. If you have a rat cage with an empty slot, you will automatically attempt to catch the rat when you find one. You can release any captured rat you don't want by going to the rat page and selecting Abandon.

All of the locations to find rats can be found in the listing of rats below

Rat Stats

Rats are just like hobos in that they have stats that determine their worth. Their stats can be trained and upgraded, and they have skills that can be increased to give additional benefits.

Basic Rat Stats

Rats have 4 stats you can train and/or upgrade and 3 upgrade only stats. These stats are what defines your rats worth in everything you do with it. There is also a calculated stat (Index) based off of the others.

Lifespan / Age Hunger
Lifespan is the total number of days your rat has left before it dies, and Age is the total number of days your rat has lived so far. Every major (AM) reset, your rat's Age increases by one day and its Lifespan decreases by one day. Rats die once their Lifespan reaches zero. Additional Lifespan can be gained through upgrade purchases and the Vegetarianism skill.
Energy Agility
Energy is similar to Awake as it's required to preform rat activities. It takes 30 Energy per hour for a rat to train, 10 Energy to fight another rat, and 30 Energy to sign up a rat for a duel. Rats regain 5 Energy every 20 minutes, taking 6 hours and 40 minutes to recover 100 Energy. A rat can also gain Energy by being fed food items. Additionally, Max Energy can be increased by upgrade purchases. Agility is similar to your hobo's speed stat in that it provides your rat with more chances to attack. Agility can be gained through training and upgrade purchases. Agility can be further boosted by the Speed Mastery skill; however, the skill only affects rat fights and rat duels.
Strength Concentration
Strength is similar to your hobo's power stat in that it provides your rat with offensive power. Strength can be gained through training and upgrade purchases. Strength can be further boosted by the Damage Mastery skill; however, the skill only affects rat fights and rat duels. Concentration is similar to your hobo's strength stat in that it provides your rat with defense. Concentration can be gained through training and upgrades. Concentration can be further boosted by the Defense Mastery skill; however, the skill only affects rat fights and rat duels.
Vitality Index
Vitality is similar to your hobo's life stat. Vitality can be gained through training and upgrade purchases. Vitality only matters in rat fights and rat duels. Index determines what other rats you can fight and increases as a rat's stats or level increases. The formula for rat index is:
Index = 1 + ( Int{ 0.02 [ ( Level * 4 ) + Agility + Concentration + Strength + ( Vitality / 5 ) ] } )

There is also an unused rat stat called Weight. This was introduced when Governor Malord was still coding for the game, but was never finalized before Malord left.

Training Stats

You can train your rat's battle stats. Rats can gain [0.40 + (0.01 * Training Mastery Level ) ] Agility / Strength / Concentration or [2 + (0.05 * Training Mastery Level) ] Vitality per train. It costs 30 Energy per training session and rats gain their stats on the hour. Rats cannot train their Lifespan, Hunger, or Energy stats. Although there is no limit to how long a rat can be trained for (as long as it has the Energy required for that training session's duration), once a rat's training session is set up, it must be completed in full before another one can be set up.

Upgrading Stats

Upgrading your rat's stats will cost you a bit of money. You can purchase up to 10 upgrades for each rat stat. To purchase an upgrade, have the money on hand and then click the [+] in the column of the stat you want to upgrade.

Rat Levels

You can have your rat fight to gain experience. Rats can only attack other rats that have either the same Index or ±1 Index that they currently have.

Every level your rat gains grants it 3 free stat upgrades and 1 free Skill point.

As your rat gain levels, you can level up its Skills.

Rat Skills

Rats gain skills through leveling, and those skills offer a wide range of enhancements, from boosts to battle stats during fights, to increasing your non-battle stats.

Training Mastery Speed Mastery
+(0.01 * Mastery Level) gain to Agility / Strength / Concentration trains per level.
+(0.05 * Mastery Level) gain to Vitality trains per level.

Rats in Hobo Fights

Rats can be very helpful in your quest to conquer other hobos in your fights. Rat attacks happen every 5 rounds in fights. The rat that does attacks that round in the fight is based on the rats agility stat. If you have more then one rat, you can choose which rat will fight by choosing the Hobo Fights link on the toolbar and clicking the image of the rat you want fighting.

Battle Grounds for Rats

Rats are tied into most hobo fights but not all. The different areas that rats help in hobo fights are:

Rat Damage during Fights

Generally speaking, the higher your hobo's level, the more damage your rat will do if it gets the hits in hobo fights. Damage is also influenced by the Strength and Index of the attacking rat and the Concentration of the defending rat. The rat's Speed determines which rat is the one that attacks.

Your rat's Vitality does not play a role in determining how much damage it does in hobo fights.

Duels

Rat duels do not happen immediately after the pair is set. This is because hobos can wager bets on the duels. Any hobo can make a bet, but be warned that once you make a bet of any type, the bet cannot be unmade.

For winning a duel, you receive $40,000 + 2% of the total amount bet on your duel as well as a small amount of exp. You receive nothing for losing a duel.

The formula for bets placed on duels is:
Payout = ( Your Bet / Total of Winning Bets ) * Total Amount of All Bets

General FAQ

How do I keep rats I find?

In order to own a rat, you must buy a rat cage from the Pet Shop. If you have an open slot in your cage, you will automatically obtain the rat.

What is the best type of rat?

The best starting type is the Golden Rat.

Is there a limit to the number of rounds a rat fight can go?

The limit is 999 moves, after that it simply says "**** and **** made draw."

There is a rat on the "Rat Fights" page with the "[Fight]" link crossed out, what does this mean?

You can only attack one rat 3 times per day. You must wait until the next day to attack it again.

My rat has negative lifespan. How did this happen?

Your rat will be listed with negative lifespan if you have applied any one of the bonus skill points you received from leveling towards Vegetarianism. This does not always happen though.
Your rats lifespan will still be listed as a positive number on the page you see of your rats stats, however, it may show as negative on the "Rat Fights" page once you are into the days that Vegetarianism give you.

What is the purpose of the Cemetery?

You can reserve a spot for your rat in the cemetery. This will save some of your rats information for you or others to look up after it dies, including your rats name, your name, its age, level, and index, as well as the time that it died.
If you pay for a spot then abandon your rat, you will forfeit your cemetery space.

If I have a 1 slot cage and purchase a 2 or 3 slot cage, will my rat be lost?

No, your rat will still be there, you'll just receive extra slots.

Can I change the order of the rats in my cage?

No, you cannot.

My rat lost some of its energy I gave it from feeding!

This is NOT a glitch. If your rat has more "current" energy then its "max" energy when the 20-minute mark hits, it will reset back down to the "max" energy amount and you lose all the energy above that. Long-story short, don't feed your rats near the 20-minute marks.
